When talking about PEZ collecting, a name that immediately comes to mind is Luís Macedo, one of the greatest Portuguese collectors and a tireless promoter of this pop culture that we all love.
MY DEAR PEZ was chatting with him and we talked about his collection and his PEZ world.


Introduce yourself and tell us when you started collecting?
My name is Luís, but as we all know, in some hobbies and with the internet we are led to have a nickname... in this case, my name is Pezilla. So maybe he's another nerd of these wanderings (laughs). This name unites two of my interests, PEZ and the Godzilla universe. This name also gave rise to a PEZ blog in Portuguese and the Portugal PEZ Gathering.

Your first PEZ was...
I remember that as a child I saw something for sale, but I wouldn't have the money to buy them either. Probably back then I preferred ice cream... I still prefer it today! (laughter). If I had any PEZ dispensers at that time, they didn't live to remember. Later and with certainty, in the 90s I had a PEZ Garfield. But collecting only started in 2011, well... it's been 10 years this September... and in this case the first one was a Po dispenser, the Kung Fu Panda.

How many PEZ do you have in your collection?
I've had over 1300 different PEZ dispensers, but now I'm restructuring the collection and it's shrinking considerably. I think it passes on to some collectors, from different hobbies. At the moment I'm only interested in a few series, such as Marvel, DC Comics, Star Wars and Star Trek. And I collect without the blisters... FREE PEZ! (laughter). Is your collection just PEZ dispensers or the entire universe of this brand?
I also collect or we can say that I collected other PEZ things, especially advertisements for magazines that came out in different countries.

Your favorite PEZ is...
It's quite difficult to answer this question. There are vintage PEZ dispensers that are real gems, in the way they are made, sometimes "badly made" which gives them a phenomenal aura. But then there are the common ones, who because of the characters they are, I have affection for them. Honestly, if in the end I could only choose one, I would even lean more towards a common one. If you choose a vintage PEZ, I really like the 1965 Wolfman, if it's an "intermediate, I love the Speedy Gonzalez version A, "more normal", it could be one of Marvel's Wolverines.

Do you have a maximum value to give for a PEZ? And what's the most you've paid for a PEZ for your collection?
Have not have. At first I think we thought about it, but then there are opportunities or misfortunes (laughs) that can make us "lose our minds". Right now I'm not interested in vintages, so I don't think about it anymore (thankfully). The maximum... I think I had a memory failure in that detail (laughs).

Where do you buy your PEZ?
Formerly in supermarkets, but mainly on the internet. With the change that took place recently with extra-community mailings, except on the internet. However, friendships are made with people from other countries and in the past I have also made some exchanges, as the American PEZ market is different from the European one and vice versa. If you were the owner of PEZ which/which ones would you like to be able to create that don't exist yet?
There's a saying that goes something like "you're only really known when they put your head in a PEZ dispenser", so I was the "PEZ owner" myself! (laughter). No, seriously... did Godzilla without a shadow of a doubt.

Many PEZ collectors collect other things. Do you collect anything else?
I've already collected more. Currently I have been interested in vinyl figures from the Bandai Godzilla Movie Monsters Series, about 15 cm tall and much longer, we wouldn't have to mention the tail of the King of Monsters!

And finally, can you give some advice to anyone who wants to get started in this world of PEZ?
The best advice I can give you is to fall in love with what you are collecting. They want to know the story and the details and not just if the character A or B came out, or if one day they will be worth a lot. That in my opinion is not collecting, it's just putting things together and you don't get pleasure from it. And make friends. At PEZ Gatherings and social media you can meet many people and certainly some become great friends. Quando se fala em coleccionismo de PEZ um nome que vem logo à ideia é o de Luís Macedo, um dos maiores coleccionadores portugueses e um incansável divulgador desta cultura pop que todos amamos. O MY DEAR PEZ esteve à conversa com ele e falamos sobre a sua colecção e o seu mundo PEZ.


Apresenta-te e diz-nos quando começaste a coleccionar?
Chamo-me Luís, mas como todos sabemos, em alguns hobbies e com a internet somos levados a ter algum nickname... nesse caso, chamo-me Pezilla. Portanto, talvez seja mais um nerd destas andanças (risos). Esse nome une dois dos meus interesses, os PEZ e o universo do Godzilla. Esse nome também deu origem a um PEZ blog em português e ao Portugal PEZ Gathering.

O teu primeiro PEZ foi...
Recordo-me que em criança ver algo à venda, mas tampouco teria dinheiro para os comprar. Provavelmente nessa altura preferia gelados... ainda hoje prefiro! (risos). Se tive algum dispensador PEZ nessa altura, não sobreviveu para me lembrar. Mais tarde e já com certezas, nos anos 90 tive um PEZ Garfield. Mas o coleccionismo só começou em 2011, bom... já faz 10 anos este mês de setembro... e neste caso o primeiro foi um dispensador do Po, o Panda do Kung Fu.

Quantos PEZ tens na tua colecção?
Já tive mais de 1300 dispensadores PEZ diferentes, mas estou a restruturar a colecção e esta está a diminuir consideravelmente. Creio que passa a alguns coleccionadores, de diferentes hobbies. Neste momento apenas me estão a interessar algumas séries, como a Marvel, a DC Comics, Star Wars e Star Trek. E colecciono sem os blisters... FREE PEZ! (risos). A tua colecção é apenas os dispensadores PEZ ou todo o universo desta marca?
Também colecciono ou podemos dizer que coleccionei outras coisas PEZ, em especial publicidade das revistas que saíram em diferentes países.

O teu PEZ favorito é...
É bastante difícil responder a essa questão. Há dispensadores PEZ vintage que são autênticas jóias, no modo como estão feitos, por vezes "mal feitos" o que lhes dão uma aura fenomenal. Mas depois há os comuns, que pelos personagens que são tenho afeição a eles. Sinceramente, se no final pudesse escolher só um, até me inclinaria mais para algum comum. Se escolher um PEZ vintage, gosto muito por exemplo do Wolfman de 1965, se for um "intermédio, adoro o do Speedy Gonzalez versão A, "mais normal", podia ser um dos Wolverine da Marvel.

Tens um valor máximo para dar por um PEZ? E qual foi o máximo que já pagaste por um PEZ para a tua coleção?
Ter não tenho. No princípio creio que pensamos nisso, mas depois surgem oportunidades ou desgraças (risos) que nos podem fazer "perder a cabeça". Neste momento não estou interessado em vintages, pelo que já não penso nisso (e ainda bem). O máximo... acho que me ocorreu uma falha de memória nesse detalhe (risos).

Onde compras os teus PEZ?
Antigamente nos supermercados, mas principalmente na internet. Com a mudança que ocorreu recentemente com os envios extracomunitários, menos na internet. No entanto fazem-se amizades com pessoas de outros países e no passado também fiz algumas trocas, visto que o mercado PEZ americano é diferente do europeu e vice-versa. Se fosses dono da PEZ qual/quais seriam os que gostarias de poder criar e que ainda não existem?
Há um ditado que diz algo assim "só és realmente conhecido quando puserem a tua cabeça num dispensador PEZ", por isso fazia o "dono da PEZ", eu mesmo! (risos). Não, a sério... fazia o Godzilla sem sombra de dúvida.

Muitos dos coleccionadores de PEZ colecionam outras coisas. Tu coleccionas mais alguma coisa?
Já coleccionei mais. Actualmente tenho tido interesse por figuras de vinil da Bandai Godzilla Movie Monsters Series, com cerca de 15 cm de altura e muitos mais de comprimento, não estivéssemos a falar da cauda do rei dos Monstros!

E por último, podes dar um conselho a quem quer iniciar-se neste mundo dos PEZ?
O melhor conselho que posso dar é que se apaixonem pelo que estão a coleccionar. Queiram saber da história e dos detalhes e não apenas se saiu o personagem A ou B, ou se um dia vão valer muito. Isso na minha opinião não é coleccionar, é apenas juntar coisas e não se tem prazer com isto. E fazer amigos. Nos PEZ Gatherings e nas redes sociais podem conhecer-se muitas pessoas e com toda a certeza algumas ficam grandes amigos.
