PEZ caramels were invented in 1927 by the Austrian businessman Eduard Haas III. Anti-smoker, Eduard created them with the intention of representing an alternative to tobacco. Initially, only peppermint flavored dragees were produced and that is precisely where the brand name comes from. In German, peppermint is spelled "PfeffErminz", and PEZ represents the first letter of the word "P", the middle letter "E" and the end letter "Z".
The original shape of the caramels was round and sold in small tin boxes. While the shape was quickly revised for the current and famous rectangle, the dispenser would still take a few years to be invented. Given the success of these small sweets, in 1935 a large-scale production factory was built in Czechoslovakia.
In 1948, inventor Oscar Uxa patented a small mechanical dispenser that would become the embryo of the famous PEZ. It was presented to the public at the Vienna Trade Fair the following year. The purpose of this dispenser was to be easy to use (for example, allow you to take a caramel while driving) and allow you to give it to another person without touching other caramels in the box.
In 1952, PEZ headquarters moved to the US, although production remained in Europe. Later that year, the first dispenser was patented, having been granted patent number 2.620.061. It was in 1955 that a dispenser with a full character format (Santa Claus and a robot) appeared for the first time and in 1956 PEZ created an original dragee dispenser in pistol format. The following year, because the full-shape character dispensers had very high production costs, a dispenser with the character's head on top was created, a Halloween Witch.
The first licensed character appears the following year, Popeye. In the 60s, the brand introduced new and original flavors in its caramels, such as licorice, flowers or chlorophyll, while the 70s were years of exponential growth for this brand, which established itself in Connecticut, where it remains until today.
The final shape of the dispensers we know today was only created in 1987, when “feet” were added, which allow to keep the dispenser upright. Given the variety of characters on top of the dispensers, these quickly became collectors' items.
In 1991, the first PEZ collectors' convention took place in Ohio. The value of these little toys quickly reached quite high prices. The most expensive transaction known, for $7,000, was a private sale of Mickey Mouse, an object that had never been sold before, as it was a prototype.

Inicialmente, apenas foram produzidas drageias com sabor hortelã-pimenta e é precisamente daà que surge o nome da marca. Em alemão, hortelã-pimenta escreve-se "PfeffErminz", e PEZ representa a primeira letra da palavra "P", a do meio "E" e a do final "Z".
O formato original dos caramelos era redondo e vendido em pequenas caixas de lata. Enquanto o formato foi rapidamente revisto para o actual e famoso retângulo, o dispensador ainda levaria uns anos a ser inventado. Dado o sucesso destes pequenos doces, em 1935, foi contruÃda uma fábrica na Checoslováquia, para produção em grande escala.

Foi no ano de 1955 que surgiu pela primeira vez um dispensador com formato integral de personagem (um Pai Natal e um robot) e em 1956 a PEZ criou um original dispensador de drageias em formato de pistola. No ano seguinte, porque os dispensadores com o formato total da personagem tinham custos de produção muito elevados, foi criado um dispensador com a cabeça da personagem no topo, uma Bruxa de Halloween. A primeira personagem licenciada surge no ano seguinte, o Popeye.
Já na década de 60, a marca introduziu novos e originais sabores nas suas drageias, como alcaçuz, flores ou clorofila, enquanto os anos 70 foram anos de crescimento exponencial para esta marca, que se firmou no Connecticut, onde se mantém até hoje.
O formato final dos dispensadores que conhecemos hoje, apenas foi criado em 1987, quando foram adicionados os “pés”, que permitem manter o dispensador na vertical. Dada a variedade de personagens no topo dos dispensadores, estes rapidamente se tornaram objecto de colecção.
Em 1991, teve lugar, no Ohio, a primeira convenção de colecionadores de PEZ. O valor destes pequenos brinquedos rapidamente atingiu preços bastante elevados. A transação mais cara conhecida, por $7.000, foi uma venda privada do Mickey Mouse, objecto nunca antes vendido, já que se tratava de um protótipo.
